OK, and now for something completely different

He looked outside at the reddening sky, his face carried a look of constipation.
However, it was not the toilet window he was looking out through, he was on the balcony. Neither was he relieving himself, in fact he was sipping on a margarita and the thought patterns which showed through on his face in that unfortunate dualist expression were in fact related to the impending doom he felt for the coming night.
‘They’ll attack again’ he said, to no one in particular.

As the sky turned from red to gray and then the darkness started seeping in he took one last look at the vast expanse of wilderness outside and touched the panel located next to the window; a soft blue glow slowly scanned his handprint before a low mechanical whine emanated seemingly from nowhere and metallic shutter slowly rolled over all the windows.

He cursed under his breath, why of all places had they sent him here?
Well, it was a stupid question, being found in the closet of a diplomat’s house with his daughter and a bucket of grease would have done it. Not enough to get thrown out of the rangers but certainly enough to get posted to this god-forsaken place. Beautiful enough during the day, but vastly devoid of human habitation due to its nocturnal inhabitants.

He took one more sip of his martini before hearing the first resounding thunk, followed by more and more until their frequency increased to the point where they were no longer individually distinguishable and a low rumble was evident.
He touched a remote and Vivaldi’s Four Seasons flooded the apartment and drowned out the background noise, allowing his mind to drift once more.

The music stopped, startling him out of his daydream and back into his nightmare.
‘Shit, electrical system again. Inherently bad design”.
No sooner had the words left his lips then the shutters started rolling up slowly; the windows that only minutes earlier framed a majestic view of the valley were now covered with a blue liquid. Pressed up against it were hundreds of small faces, each human in shape but not much larger then the size of a coin.
Each face looking at him through the blue glow that now filled the room, the light from their wings shining through the blue liquid, all that remained of the first few, over-eager ones.
Each face looking at him with a longing, their eyes burning into his with wistful desire.

He continued drinking the martini, after all, the glass was 5 inches thick, although it was worrying that he would have another fifteen hours to have to put up with looking at their evil impish faces. He went to take another sip and found the glass empty;
‘great’ he thought, going to the bar to fill up, quietly thanking the moment for the chance to look away from the window.
Then it begun, at first he thought that the music would start again as the amplifier started up and a low hiss emanated, but then, it spoke.
‘Oh come on, you know we won’t hurt you much… come on… you know what we want, give it to us and we shan’t bother you again’
As he poured his second martini, his lips only parting to allow some of the fluid down his throat, only one thought crossed his mind.
‘Fucking tooth fairys’…
