The nature of risk
Posted by tmz_99 on August 5th, 2007 filed in UncategorizedI guess Im a big advocate of risk. It appears that actions with big risks reap bigger rewards, weather they be financial or intrinsic.
I however don’t believe in gambling, I like to think that risk management is an integral part of life, gambling is not managing risks, it’s pretty much just being stupid.
So at the moment I’m feeling like I’m a little risk-stretched in certain areas and not enough in others. I feel that financially I’m stretched taking the risk on the new property, personally I’m stretched with family and the gf, so now I’m trying to stretch the risk in other avenues.
This week I should have two prospective flatmates come and have a look at the house, seeing as my sister has gone on the prawn boats it will be good to have someone in the house, as well as the extra income, however it is somewhat risky having a stranger living there whilst I’m away, hopefully the two coming over will be nice people and I won’t have reason to regret my decision.
I’m starting to think I’m not putting myself into enough physical risk, it’s clear I need to take up some sort of sport in the near future, until then the motorbike shall have to suffice (and I get my car back.. apparently.. this time home).
Then there’s vocational risk, I’m not sure if I’m doing enough there, I applied for my masters but haven’t heard back from them yet. It appears that I will be working out of Singapore for a while (FIFO as per usual) and then somewhere else once the rig is finished and moves away from harbour… As much as the idea of doing that (working overseas) appeals, I can’t help but think I should be doing something riskier, edgier, that I crave more. I’ll have to keep my eyes and ears open.
It’s dangerous to get complacent and content.
