It’s so hard to say goodbye

Phone etiquete is a funny beast. Opening the conversation is never hard for me, it usually goes along the lines of “Hello, this is Tom from ***, how are you doing today?” “fine? oh yes, thats nice, I’m feeling rather brilliant myself… now [that the phone courting ritual is over], I’m actually calling about such and such a matter..].
This is usually followed by a lengthy discussion about the smell of fish or possibly me asking them what they’re wearing. The problem is, once I have concluded my important conversation or run out of breath due to heavy breathing, I find it hard and akward to end the phonecall.
Phrases such as “This converstaion  has concluded, bye” or “Thats all I need to say [hanging up]” seem a bit harsh, small talk is irrelevant and phrases such as “oh well, I hope you have a nice day” seem sort of weak.
It’s a tough line between sounding too abrupt and sounding too flakey consequently making all the endings of my phone conversations unecessarily akward.

With your Polish background I didn’t expect you to be dark-skinned Tom. Too much time spent outside on the rig? Try a job in sales where you have to have conversations all day on the phone. Perhaps you’re not cut out for telemarketing. Although the end may be taken care of for you.

yes.. you do do that.. it is like goodbyes are awkward in general to you.. and it is odd cause it is the only aspect in which you are always rude… and not a gentleman…
